Have you ever had words spoken over you that felt weird, wrong, or totally incongruent with everything else you'd been contemplating? That happened to me the other week when 3 women from church offered soaking prayer for me. Everything they told me had to do with being set apart and holy and weird visions.
Tara: So what did you think when they said that?
Me: Shit!
I was explaining that it was like someone handing you a wrapped gift and you think they really know you. Then you open the box and it's a subscription to Sports Illustrated and lime green thong underwear. Then you don't feel known at all. You feel oddly betrayed.
Tara gave me permission to wrap the box of that message from God back up and stick the holiness message in the garage.

Hhhmmmm, I can kind of relate. Kind of. I had a bad experience when I went up for prayer at a church we had only gone to a couple times. 2 men and 1 woman were the hands-on prayer warriors. Prayer warriors, ok, but discerning, no way! Before they prayed the woman asked if I was involved in any sort of sinful pattern--and she specifically said PORN!! I was stunned, which is a good thing, because I would have given her a piece of my mind. We never went back. I wish I had slapped her face...oops, did I say that out loud?! One goes up for healing, NOT to be offended! Wrong wrong, wrong. sigh
ReplyDeleteSo, sorry you were misprayed over! I can imagine the betrayal you feel. Tell them to ditch the bunny ears and go digital or HD, maybe they will get a clearer signal.
Kimberlee- I love you! This really made me laugh. Good thing the prayer warrior ended your career as a pole dancer and you ended up as a barista instead! I especially like the part about the bunny ears. Reminds me of an old Over the Rhine song: "I radio heaven. I get mixed signals. I move the antenna. I switch the channels." Your writing delights me, and you have good things to say. You should write/blog more! I still go back and read an email you sent once about how life turned out differently than you thought it would. Few people can be so funny and beautiful at the same time.
ReplyDeleteYou're too kind.
ReplyDeleteI HEART Over the Rhine!!! Love her voice. Chris got me a signed poster and a signed CD from them! :) We were very fortunate to see them perform at Wheaton College in '99.
Wise advice from Tara, I think. It is always important to note that people don't hear perfectly from God and that they are subject to error. It is ok to check it against what you sense God saying to you. If it doesn't sound right, the storage closet or the garage may be a perfect place for it. :)
